Kevin Durant is reportedly planning to turn down his player option with the Golden State Warriors for the 2017-2018 season and become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, but he will still sign and stay on with the team with whom he won his first-ever National Basketball Association championship.
Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant (35) hoists the MVP trophy during the Warriors 2017 championship victory parade in downtown Oakland. ESPN is reporting that Durant will not exercise his $28 million option for next year.
He also played a key role in the playoff rotation as the Warriors brought home the 2017 National Basketball Association title. In his first year with Golden State, he and the Dubs defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers in five games in the NBA Finals. Stephen Curry, Shaun Livingston and Andre Iguodala all have their contracts expire on July 1, among others. “We want to keep this thing together”.
If Durant can sign a deal earning roughly $4 million less than league max – $36 million per year – it will allow the Warriors to use Iguodala’s Bird rights and increase the team’s chances of retaining the 2015 Finals MVP and Sixth Man of the Year candidate. Curry made $12.1 million last season.
The Golden State Warriors, the reigning National Basketball Association champions, risk losing Shaun Livingston in free agency this offseason, per a new report. “Unlike Iguodala, Livingston never signed a big money deal, due to the bad knee injury that derailed much of the early part of his career”.
Iggie could very well leave the Warriors and they could still win without him. The two-time NBA executive of the year was Lakers general manager/executive vice president of basketball operations for 18 years during which the team won four NBA crowns. He averaged 27 points, 6.7 assists and 5.8 rebounds for his career.
